The Parks and Facilities unit is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of all city parks and athletic facilities. Staff also maintains and provides custodial services to properties throughout the city. This includes City Hall, the Annex, Slater Community Center, Avoca Library, Animal Shelter, Transit Garage, Community Relations Offices, Nature Center, Golf Shop and Fire Stations for a total of 46 structures (185,290 sq. ft). This also includes 36 public restrooms that are serviced daily.
Parks and Facilities provide all grounds keeping services for city parks and facilities. The 35 locations are serviced on a 7-10 day rotation. This covers approximately 253 acres. All decorative signage, trees and plantings are maintained as well.
Parks and Facilities crews provide year round service to 12 baseball/softball fields, 7 soccer fields, 7 tennis courts, 7 basketball courts, 11 playgrounds, 12 rental shelters, 3 stages, 10 bridges, 25 miles of wilderness trails, 7 miles of paved/gravel walking trails, a 52 acre lake and 2 ponds.
Staff maintains over 1,500 paved parking spaces to include 5 parking lots (164 spaces) in the downtown area.
Staff also provides set-up, staffing and tear-down for all community events. This includes Farmers Markets, Downtown Center Music, Border Bash, Movies and Concerts in the Park, Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Food City Race Night, 4th of July Celebrations, etc. Set-ups include staging, sound systems, tables, chairs, tents, bleachers, golf carts, and powers distribution.
