The Slater Community Center is located at 325 McDowell Street and encompasses 3.75 acres. The 70,100 square feet building was originally constructed to serve as the segregated high school. Over the years the building has served many functions. The Bristol Sullivan Technical School was housed here for many years.
In 1982 the building was occupied by the Parks & Recreation Department and would serve as offices and a Community Center. Over the next 3 years the building underwent numerous renovations.
The building continues to serve the community with a mix of uses. The 1st floor hosts our Senior Program division. There are 2 cardio rooms, a weight room, a billiards room, cafeteria classroom, auditorium and offices on this floor. The cafeteria serves as a gathering place for the seniors and includes 3 computer stations.
The 64 feet by 84 feet gym also serves many functions. During the daytime it is primarily used for senior exercise programs. Most days around lunch there is a pick-up basketball game. Regular dances and social events are also held in the gym.
The 208 seat Auditorium hosts the City Council meeting each month. Other board meetings, classes and training events are also hosted here.
