Slater Community Center
The Slater Community Center is located at 325 McDowell Street and encompasses 3.75 acres. The 70,100 square feet building was originally constructed to serve as the segregated high school. Over the years the building has served many functions. The Bristol Sullivan Technical School was housed here for many years.
In 1982 the building was occupied by the Parks & Recreation Department and would serve as offices and a Community Center. Over the next 3 years the building underwent numerous renovations.
The building continues to serve the community with a mix of uses. The 1st floor hosts our Senior Program division. There are 2 cardio rooms, a weight room, a billiards room, cafeteria classroom, auditorium and offices on this floor. The cafeteria serves as a gathering place for the seniors and includes 3 computer stations. The cafeteria is also used for classes, public meetings/events and is available for rental.
The 64 feet by 84 feet gym also serves many functions. During the daytime it is primarily used for senior exercise programs. Most days around lunch there is a pick-up basketball game. Regular dances and social events are also held in the gym. Our youth basketball uses the space for both practice and Saturday games. The gym is also available for public rental.
The 208 seat Auditorium hosts the City Council meeting each month. Other board meetings, classes and training events are also hosted here. The auditorium is also available for public rental. The Parks & Recreation Administrative Offices are located on the 2nd floor. There is also a computer lab, conference room, yoga room and 3 classrooms.
The building is heated by steam using a gas fired boiler. Air conditioners with duct work have been installed throughout the building to keep it cool during the summer months.
The basement is split into 2 separate areas. One area houses the Police Departments Training and Community Police Offices. This area includes offices, a classroom and Use of Force Scenario Room. A large unfinished area has been converted using movable walls to serve as a "Simulation Shoot House." The employee fitness center is also located on this side of the building along with additional storage rooms. The other area houses the spin cycle room with 11 spin cycles, the athletic equipment storage rooms, a single stall restroom and a storage room for paper and cleaning supplies for the City's parks.
The building has an elevator installed to make it ADA accessible. The parking areas can accommodate 150 vehicles and 9 spaces reserved for the handicapped.
The administrative offices of Parks and Recreation are located in the Slater Community Center. Many senior activities as well as youth and adult recreation activities are held at Slater.
We have several rooms available for rental to hold meetings, parties, etc. We have a kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium and auditorium also available for rental. View our photo gallery.
