Sounds of Summer, a free concert series that each summer brings live music to downtown Bristol, will return for its 24th season on Tuesday, June 1, with a 7 p.m. performance by local bluegrass band Duty Free.

This free concert series, sponsored by the Bristol Tennessee Department of Parks and Recreation, will take place near the iconic country music mural at Downtown Center each Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Although the series was canceled last year amid the national health crisis, this year’s schedule is packed with a full lineup of local groups and tribute bands. The series continues each week through September.

“Sounds of Summer is the longest running concert series in downtown Bristol, and it has become a summer tradition for many families in our community,” said Coordinator Angie Rutherford. “We’ve put together an exceptional schedule, which includes local bluegrass bands on Tuesday evenings and country/southern rock groups on Thursdays. We’ve also included three tribute bands that will bring the music of the Rolling Stones, Heart, and Aerosmith to our historic downtown.”

Well known throughout the region for its bluegrass and gospel sounds, Duty Free features talented musicians Hal Boyd, Bobby Love, Charlie Powers, Rick Powers, and Tim Laughlin. They’ll kick off the series on Tuesday, June 1, then Thomas Taylor will take the stage on Thursday, June 3, to round out the first week of the 2021 series.
